Reasons to Give Skype a Try

If you haven’t tried Skype already, it may be time for you to take the plunge. More and more people are using Skype as a way to communicate with friends and family that they may not be able to see face to face. If you have someone close to you that lives out of town, consider contacting them and giving this program a try.

It might save you money. If you are currently spending money on long distance phone calls you could be wasting your money. Instead of paying that home phone or cell phone bill, talk to that person over the computer using Skype. It will not cost you anything and there is no limit to the amount of time that you can talk. If the two groups don’t already have web cams there may be some upfront cost, however over the course of a month or two the money will come back to you in the form of savings from lack of long distance calls.

Seeing someone face to face is important. There is nothing better that grandma and grandpa being about to see their grandchildren’s faces. If there is a lot of distance between the two of you this is the perfect way for the grandparents to see the kids grow and have a chance to talk with them directly. The kids can hold up school papers or books they are reading. It keeps the communication more personal and benefits everyone involved.

You have nothing to lose when it comes to trying out Skype. If you don’t like it, just don’t use it anymore. If you like it, keep practicing with it until it is easier to set up conversations with friends and family. This is a unique way for your family to keep in touch with the people in your life that you don’t get to see regularly.

Get Rid of the Home Phone

If you have a home phone and a cell phone, you may be able to save some money each month by getting rid of one. Obviously you aren’t going to want to go without your constant companion, the cell phone. So do you really need that home phone that collects dust on the wall in the kitchen?

Think about the services tying you to a home phone and see if there is any way to incorporate them into your cell phone service. If you have relatives that live out of town you may need to keep long distance services. Today, most cell phones come with some type of long distance so check with your provider to see what your options are. You may find that you already have long distance as part of your package.

Worried about the amount of minutes that you use? For one month attempt to keep track of the amount of minutes that you spend taking on your home phone. Add them to the number of minutes that you used on the cell phone. You can check your bill to get the exact numbers. Would you have gone over in minutes? If so, find out how much it would cost to add minutes to your plan. If it costs less than what you are paying for a home phone you may have found your solution.

Getting rid of your home phone can reduce one of the bill that you have to pay each month. In fact you may find that you end up saving a little money as well. If you haven’t already, take the time to at least keep track of your usage and payments for a month and find out whether or not this option is for you.

How to Leverage Tech Advances for Adult Education

Technology has influenced change in almost every part of our lives. It has changed the way that we communicate with people, the way we receive information and most importantly the way that we process information. These changes can be used to people’s advantage when it comes to teaching various adult education classes. The key is knowing how to use these various technological advances in order to benefit the adult education world. Here is a look at the various ways you can leverage technological advances for adult education.

A More In-Depth Understanding

Advances in technology offer students the opportunity to have a better and more in-depth understanding of classroom concepts. These ideas can be shown and explained through the use of virtual simulation or the allows students to see and understand the information that is trying to be conveyed. These visual simulations and graphics supplement the textbook learning that the students have.

The Ability to Learn From Experts

Some classroom concepts are better understood when an expert in the field can explain them. Technology allows students in the adult education field to have the chance to receive information directly from the experts. This is done through the use of chat rooms, specialized forums and video chats that allow the students to interact directly with the experts in the field first-hand. Traditionally, students have often been unable to interact directly with these experts because they were too far away or meeting with them was too time-consuming. Technology allows these experts to interact with students and provide them information to help further their education.

A Tailored Learning Environment

Studies have found that different people learn in different ways. One student might learn better through the use of visual concepts, while another might learn better through textbooks and written material. Before technology adult education classes were forced to choose a popular way of teaching and stick with it. This forced many students to miss out on concepts as they found the particular teaching protocols used difficult to grasp. However, technology has allowed adult education classes to offer tailored learning environments. A student who is more visual can use technology to research videos, chart and various other concepts on the Internet; while student who is more text-based can use the Internet and technology to tailor their learning environment to the way that they learn.

Hands-On Learning Experience

Technology also offers the opportunity for students to have a hands-on learning experience with concepts that might not previously available without the use of technology. This hands-on learning experience allows students to see first-hand potential cause/effect relationships of concepts and even to better understand the classroom teaching because of the 3-D hands on experience the students were offered.

Technology might appear to be making many changes in the world. However, the changes it has made to the adult education world have bettered the way students learn and offers them the chance to further their education. In what ways will you now use-technology to-improve your learning experiences?

Benefits of Texting

Today there is no need to have a conversation with someone on the phone. If you both own cellphones text messaging is steady becoming the method of choice for communication. What does this mean for you? If you don’t already know how it is time to figure it out? If you aren’t very good at typing the words out you may need to practice. There are several reasons why so many people are moving away from phone calls and onto a text message.

A text message is short, sweet and to the point. There isn’t a lot of room for fluff when you are typing each word using a small keyboard. You just want to state the basic facts and move on. For the most part this is great for finding out what you need to bring home from the store, letting someone know that you are on your way to their house, or finding out what time everyone is meeting up. With one text message and one reply the question is answered or the information is received.

You can avoid wasting time on the phone. Have you ever been on the phone and the conversation just continues to drag on? You don’t have the time to listen to the other person’s story and you just can’t seem to find the will to pay attention to what they are saying. With texting you can avoid these conversations completely. You can still find out how things are going with a friend when you meet face to face another time. It isn’t that you are uninterested in their life; it just means that you are using your time more efficiently.

It provides you with a reminder. Text messages are stored on your phone. You can go back and reference what was said about the meeting time and place, what you need to get at the store and even who is going to be coming over tonight for dinner. You can use the text messages like post it notes stored within your phone.

Cell Phone for Grandparents

Technology stops for no one and you may have noticed that some of the older individuals in your life have just not kept up with some of the changes. While some advances may not be that important to them, a cell phone can be something very beneficial to them. Even if they aren’t sure that they are going to want one, you may want to take some time to introduce them to the concept and give them some examples of when it would make their life more convenient.

Show them your phone. Chances are that you have a cell phone that will be able to do so much more than they may be interested in. Don’t make it overwhelming. Just give them a chance to check it out and see what they think. Listen to the responses that they have. If they are concerned about the size of the keys or they can’t see the screen very well you want to think about these things are you pick out a cell phone that they will feel comfortable using.

If you think they are interested or even if they aren’t but you would feel more comfortable if you were able to communicate with them often, go ahead and start looking at phones. Some models may be perfect with larger keys or even a screen that is easier to see. Once you make the purchase, you want to go over the basics with them. You may want to plug in some important numbers for speed dial to make the whole thing easier. Show them how to call, how to answer and help them set ringtones.

It may take time to convince them that this is the way to go, but once they have a cell phone they will be able to contact anyone right away and it may give them a new sense of freedom. Why wouldn’t grandma want to be able to text her friends to let them know that the bridge game that was scheduled for later in the week has been canceled.

Cyber Bullying

Schoolyard bullies that take your lunch money are about as extinct as dinosaurs now. There is a new form of bullying out – and its all cyber. With the advent of new websites on the Internet such as Youtube, which preserve anonymity in some form, people are finding new outlets to release their pent-up bullying energy.

While this was relatively harmless when it came to someone stealing lunch money, the consequences of bullying someone online have had dire repercussions as seen by the recent cases of it.

Perhaps the most daunting case was that of Megan Meier. The mother of her classmate, using a fake online persona, bullied her online via Myspace. The fake online person was a boy that began messaging Megan over the social networking site – they became friends and once he had her hooked (and by he, I mean the mother of the classmate) he started sending her mean insulting messages. Megan couldn’t take that kind of pressure anymore and decided to hang herself.

Thus, online bullying can have as influential consequences as bullying in person; the only difference is that cyber bullying is easier to do. Because of the anonymity factor, and even without it in some cases, bullies feel a sense of security and invincibility, as if the Internet firewalls are somehow even protecting them from the consequences of their action. Because of this, it is especially important to monitor Internet activities – as one knows, with the invention of the internet, everything became possible.

Internet Shopping Vs. Brick and Mortar

You can do almost anything from home now.  You can go to school online, you can make appointments from home and you can shop from home.  You can buy nearly everything online.  You can get the shopping experience from your desk chair.  Shopping from home can even be a competitive activity.  Choosing where to shop and how to save money can become quite addictive.

You may need to purchase a new pillow, but you want a specific pillow.  You were able to check customer ratings online and decide that the top rated pillow is the one you want.  Now it is time to hunt.  You can become a detective.  You can search out the best prices and quality by researching thoroughly.  Then when you find your target, you pounce.  Your “target” being the deal and pounce meaning to “purchase”.  Shopping online can be turned into an activity that you enjoy more than shopping in brick and mortar stores.

There is no substitute for shopping in a store and trying things out before you buy them.  The best part about shopping in stores is that you get to take your purchases home the same day, whereas purchases made online, take days and sometimes even weeks to make its way to your home.

Grocery shopping can be done online too.  The items that you purchase on a regular basis, can be purchased and delivered to your home because of the advances in technology.  You do not have to get up or dressed, you can shop fro groceries in bed if that is what you want to do.

Shopping for goods using internet technology has made our lives a little easier and a little more entertaining, but you can only get a real shopping experience when you get out of that bed, put on your clothes and drive to the store.  This will help give you a little more fresh air and vitamin D.  Shopping online is fun but should be utilized with caution, do not turn into a hermit.  You need fresh air.

Programming Your Website to Ask Visitors Survey Questions

Businesses and website owners like to know a lot about the people that visit their websites. They want to know about their experience and any feedback that their website visitors might have. While you could always put a contact up link up there many visitors will not take the time to email you and let you know about their experience. Luckily, websites have a feature that allows you to get feedback in a quick, effective way that doesn’t take too much time.

Almost all websites have the ability to utilize survey tools to create a survey that will appear on your website. The way that these tools work is that the website or webmaster creates a survey with two to five questions on them. The tools will program the survey to pop up when the visitor visits a page on the website. This allows you to get customized feedback for the specific pages that the person is visiting.

Common questions that are asked in website surveys include any products that the visitors would like to see on the website, how customer service is and even a fill in the blank section where customers can leave a sentence or two about their experience on the website.

The best part about the survey tools that come with the website is that the webmaster and business owner do not have to allocate a large amount of their business budget to purchasing surveys or seeking out their website visitors via email. The survey goes directly to the website visitors, only has two questions on it and the customers can complete the survey in a short span of time.

With online surveys for your website there is no reason you should still be in the dark regarding issues that surround your customers and website visitors. Take a few minutes to use the research tools that are available and get a customized view of your website visitors.

Goodbye Snail Mail

The USPS system is afraid, very afraid.  They are worried that the now outdated “Letter” will be replaced by email.  This is already the case.  Nobody sends letters anymore.  They send email.  You will still get correspondences from businesses via snail mail, but family and friend will use the internet to send their messages’.  The internet has allowed us to stay in closer contact with friends and family and should be appreciated for doing so; however there is still something to be said for a hand written letter that was mailed the old fashioned way.

Hand written letters are far more personal than email.  Even greeting cards are being done online now.  This is great because it saves us time and money, but it separates us from the person we want to send the letter or card too.  That personal touch is missing.  The scent of the paper after we take it out of the envelope that reminds of the person who sends it is missing.  You cannot smell an email, no matter how hard you try.

Are we at risk of losing our humanity?  Maybe, but we as a species are meant to evolve.  Evolution is scary, but it is the way of the world.  You still need to write letters.  You still need to let certain people know that they mean more to you than a few click on the keyboard.  If our humanity is important to us, than we can still make sure that we retain a bit of it, by allowing for time to write an actual letter to those you love and care for.  Teach your children how to write a letter, you never know when it will come in handy, the world of technology can end tomorrow and we need to know how to do things the old fashioned way.  In the process of teaching your child to write a letter you can make someone’s day after they check their mailbox and find something other than a bill.
